Installation via OpenIV
- Open OpenIV and navigate to
mods/x64/audio/sfx/ - Find the sound bank (.rpf) you want to modify
- Enable Edit Mode
- Replace the .awc file with the modded version
- Ensure the replacement file has the exact same name as the original
- Test in-game to verify the sound plays correctly
Vehicle Engine Sound Replacement
- Identify the vehicle's audio hash — check
vehicles.metaforaudioNameHash - Find the corresponding .awc file in
x64/audio/sfx/ - Download the replacement engine sound (must be in .awc format)
- Replace via OpenIV in the mods folder
- Multiple vehicles can share the same audio hash — changing one affects all
Creating Custom Sounds
- Use CodeWalker or OpenFormats to extract/import .awc files
- Convert your audio to the correct format: PCM 16-bit, 44100Hz mono
- Use Audacity for audio editing — normalize levels, trim silence
- Pack edited audio back into .awc format using the appropriate tool
- Loop points must be set correctly for continuous sounds (engines, ambient)
Popular Sound Mod Categories
- Realistic Engine Sounds — real car recordings replacing default GTA audio
- Weapon Sound Overhaul — punchy, realistic gunfire and reload sounds
- Siren Pack — authentic US/European emergency sirens
- Ambient Sound Enhancement — improved city, nature, and weather sounds
- Explosion Effects — cinematic, bass-heavy explosion audio
Troubleshooting
- No sound: wrong .awc file name or incorrect audio format
- Distorted audio: sample rate mismatch — must be 44100Hz
- Looping glitch: incorrect loop point markers in the .awc
- Game crash: corrupt .awc file — re-export with correct settings
