Leveraging NVIDIA RTX hardware acceleration, this mod calculates realistic light behavior by tracing individual rays as they bounce between surfaces, producing reflections and lighting that were previously impossible in GTA 5.

Ray-Traced Reflections

The most immediately visible improvement is accurate real-time reflections on every reflective surface. Building windows show pixel-perfect reflections of the street below, vehicle paint reflects surrounding scenery with proper distortion based on body panel curves, and rain puddles mirror the world above with stunning clarity. Unlike the game's default screen-space reflections, ray-traced reflections show objects and details that are off-screen, creating genuinely accurate mirror-like surfaces throughout Los Santos.

Global Illumination

Ray-traced global illumination transforms how light behaves in the game world. Sunlight bouncing off colored surfaces casts subtle colored light onto nearby objects — a red brick wall tints adjacent surfaces with warm light, while glass buildings scatter blue sky reflections into shadows. Interior spaces receive accurate indirect lighting through windows, and outdoor areas benefit from realistic sky-lit ambient illumination that creates the soft, natural lighting found in real environments.

Enhanced Shadows

Ray-traced shadows replace the game's default shadow maps with physically accurate shadow rendering. Shadows now have proper soft penumbra edges that widen with distance from the casting object, matching real-world shadow behavior. Contact shadows appear in tight spaces where objects meet surfaces, and transparent objects like chain-link fences and tree canopies cast correct filtered shadows. The improvement is particularly dramatic during golden hour when long, soft shadows stretch across the landscape.

Ambient Occlusion

Ray-traced ambient occlusion adds realistic contact darkening where surfaces meet, in corners, and beneath objects. The effect is subtle but transforms the depth perception of every scene — cars sitting on the ground show proper ground contact shadows, building corners have natural darkening, and interior spaces feel genuinely three-dimensional with proper light falloff in corners and recesses.

Requirements and Performance

The Ray Tracing mod requires an NVIDIA RTX series GPU (RTX 2060 minimum, RTX 3070 or higher recommended) and compatible driver versions. DLSS support is included to maintain playable frame rates with ray tracing enabled. Quality presets allow scaling from light ray tracing on RTX 2060 to full path tracing on RTX 4090. Installation requires ReShade with ray tracing shaders and specific configuration files.
